He was skinny and very young-looking, no more than sixteen, but he was more interested in her than the rest. He did it because there was nothing else to do, not because he felt the need. She looked again at the boy who had blushed when she smiled at him. It was deep dusk, and birds--bullbats--were whooshing around--she could see them briefly as shadows against the darkening sky.
Pea Eye watched the Indians for a while. He knew he ought to go by and find the widow Spettle to tell her she had one less son, but decided the bad news could wait. But she didn't know if she really wanted to go see her--although she had built up a good deal of curiosity about her. The cattle ran for many miles, but soon the storm was to the east of them and he had only the rain and darkness to contend with.
