Clemens was fond of Steve Gillis from the first. pictures---cartoons of the Erie Railroad Ring,presented as illustrations of a slightly modified version of The HouseThat Jack Built. Also there are drawings-- not copied, he marksthem, with a pride not always justified by the result. He had received from somewhere new afflatus for thestory of Tom and Huck, and was working on it steadily.
